With the support of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), construction work for the new Atran bridge, which is part of the East-West Economic Corridor project, is underway. The constructions of three bridges along the East-West Economic Corridor, namely Kawkareik bridge, Zarthapyin bridge, and Atran bridge, have begun under the NLD administration in order to facilitate the flow of goods from Mawlamyaing Industrial Zone to Dawei Deep Sea Port, and from Yangon to Ayeyarwaddy Region. In 2015, the Department of Bridges, Myanmar Ministry of Construction received an ODA loan from JICA which amounted to JPY 33.9 billion with an interest rate of 0.01%, for the said bridges’ construction. The duration of the loan is 40 years. JICA has designed the bridge layout and the Loan Agreement required local construction companies to cooperate with Japanese companies.

The construction works have been signed with IHI Infrastructure System Co., Ltd, a Japanese construction company, and it is expected to take around 45 months to be completed. The new Atran Bridge is 326 meters long, with 154-meters-long bridge approach. The main bridge is designed to be a cable-stayed bridge with three span steels. Around 1.63 per cent of construction works have been completed so far and the project would take around 39 more months until completion, said Kyaw Swa Tun, Chief Engineer (Civil), Department of Bridges.
